Walking Tour Catania: Catania and the Cyclops' riviera This tour gives you a chance to see the heart of Catania and its suburbs. Brief drive through the city before reaching Porta Uzeda and the old centre. From here you will start a walking tour with a chance to admire the Cathedral, dedicated to St. Agatha, the patron saint of Catania, founded in 1094 and rebuilt after the earthquakes wich took place in 1169 and 1693, the City Hall, via Crociferi, a street lined with fine Baroque churches, via Etnea, the city's main street where we will see Piazza Università, the Baroque church of Collegiata, Piazza Stesicoro with the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre and a monument to Vincenzo Bellini. Enjoy free time for visiting Villa Bellini (public garden) or for a stroll in the main street before rejoining your coach for the drive to Acicastello. This little town takes its name from the castle of volcanic stone from where there is a fine view of the Isole dei Ciclopi (the island of the Cyclops), basalt formations of huge dimensions which according to Homer were thrown by Polyphemus against Ulysses' ship. From Acicastello the tour continues to Acireale passing Acitrezza, a pleasant fishing village made famous by Giovanni Verga in his novel "I Malavoglia". In Acireale we shall have time to admire the magnificent Baroque façades of the Town Hall, the cathedral and the church of S. Sebastiano..
